Meaning of Abbas
Abbas is an indirect Quranic name for boys that means “lion”, “a lion from which other lions run.”1, and “grim-faced”, “stern”, “morose”2. The 13th century scholar Al-Ṣaghānī says lions were called Abbas due to the grimness of their faces, therefore the “lion” meaning is secondary to the primary meaning of grimness and sternness of face.3
Abbas is the name of many companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, including ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭallib, uncle of the Prophet and an important figure in Islamic history. Abbas is derived from the ʿ-B-S root which is used in many places in the Quran.
Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day grim and distressful. (Quran 76:10)
He frowned and turned away because the blind man came to him. And what makes you know? Perhaps he would purify himself, or be reminded so that the reminder would benefit him. (Quran 80:1-4)
