Meaning of Aleena

Aleena (transliteration: alyināʾ) is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means soft, pliable, delicate, gentle, derived from the L-Y-N root. Note that the “al” in alyināʾ is not the common Arabic “al” before nouns (like al-Makkah), it is part of the word’s derivation, and “al” can be placed before it, as in the phrase al-qawm al-alyināʾ (“the gentle people/tribe”) (technically: L-Y-N -> AL-YI-NAʾ on the pattern of F-ʿ-L -> AF-ʿI-LAʾ and N-B-Y (prophet) -> AN-BI-YAʾ (prophets)).

Aleena is the plural of Layyin, as is mentioned by the the great 11th century scholar Ismāʿīl bin Ḥammād al-Jawharī, who says:

Al-Līn: Softness: the opposite of roughness. It is said: the thing became soft (lāna al-shayʿu yalīnu līnan), and something is layyin or layn which is the lightened (khafīf, technically: phonologically reduced form) from it, and the plural is alyināʾ ((which is spelled as Alayna by many people today). And people are described as layyinūn and alyināʾ, which is indeed the plural of layyin with emphasis.1

Similarly, the 14th century scholar Al-Fayyūmī says (describing how the root L-Y-N is used):

ل ي ن : لَانَ يَلِينُ لِينًا وَالِاسْمُ اللِّيَانُ مِثْلُ كِتَابٍ وَهُوَ لَيِّنٌ وَجَمْعُهُ أَلْيِنَاءُ وَيَتَعَدَّى بِالْهَمْزَةِ وَالتَّضْعِيفِ.

L-Y-N: lāna yalīnu līnan, and the noun is al-liyān like kitāb, and something is said to be layyin, and its plural is alyināʾ, and it becomes transitive with the hamza and with gemination.2

Incidentally, the lexicographer Ibn Manẓūr (14th century) in his Lisān al-ʿArab (possibly the most respected dictionary of Arabic) makes it clear that alyināʾ is the plural of layyin (“soft”, etc.) and not līn (“softness”, etc., which is another name in our collection: Leen):

وقوم لَيْنُون وأَلْيِناءُ: إنما هو جمع لَيِّن مشدداً وهو فَيْعِل لأَن فَعْلاً لا يُجْمع على أَفْعلاء.

And a group of people can be described as līnūn or alyināʾ: [alyināʾ] is the emphatic plural of layyin and it is on the fayʿil pattern, because a noun the faʿl pattern (referring to līn) is not pluralized on the afʿilāʾ (i.e. alyināʾ‘s ) pattern.3

Aleena is derived from the L-Y-N root which is used twice in the Quran. The first usage of the root is in the word layyin (which is the singular of Aleena, as mentioned above):

Then you came at the appointed time, O Moses. And I chose you for Myself. Go, you and your brother, with My signs, and do not slacken in My remembrance. Go both of you to Pharaoh, indeed he has transgressed. So speak to him with gentle speech, perhaps he may be reminded or fear. They said: Our Lord, indeed we fear that he may act hastily against us or that he may transgress. (Quran 20:40-45)

The second mention of L-Y-N is in the word līnah (Leenah in our collection), which means “soft, tender date palm tree”:

And had it not been that Allah decreed exile for them, He would have punished them in this world, and for them in the Hereafter is the punishment of the Fire. That is because they opposed Allah and His Messenger, and whoever opposes Allah, then indeed Allah is severe in punishment. Whatever palm trees you cut down or left standing upon their roots, it was by Allah’s permission and so that He might disgrace the disobedient. (Quran 59:3-5)

@1: Aleena is a correct and valid name, those people can look at the Lisan al-Arab dictionary, the most respected Arabic language dictionary, and they will find Aleena right on the first line of the entry for the L-Y-N root:

    اللِّينُ: ضِدُّ الخُشونة. يقال في فِعْل الشيء اللَّيِّن: لانَ الشيءُ يَلِينُ لِيْناً ولَيَاناً وتَلَيَّن وشيءٌ لَيِّنٌ ولَيْنٌ، مخفف منه، والجمع أَلْيِناءُ.
