Meaning of Amina (Aaminah)
Amina means “safe one“, “safe and secure“, someone or something that is protected from all that causes fear or harm. It is the name of Prophet Muhammad’s mother (peace be upon him). Note that the emphasis is on the A at the beginning (thus a long Aa and a quick mina), as opposed to the name Ameena where the emphasis is on the mee.
Then indeed your Lord, to those who emigrated after they had been compelled [to renounce their religion] and thereafter fought [for the cause of Allah] and were patient, indeed your Lord, after that, is Forgiving and Merciful. [It is] the Day when every soul will come disputing for itself, and every soul will be fully compensated for what it did, and they will not be wronged. And Allah presents an example: a city which was safe and secure, its provision coming to it in abundance from every location, but it denied the favors of Allah. So Allah made it taste the envelopment of hunger and fear for what they had been doing. And there had certainly come to them a Messenger from among themselves, but they denied him; so punishment overtook them while they were wrongdoers. (16:110-113)

Assalamu alaikum 🙂
Alhamdulillah I am a revert to islam. I chose the name Amina as a muslim name for me as it is the name of the mother of our beloved Rasulullah (saws). I ask Allah to grant good and pious children like Prophet Muhammad (saws) to me and to all of you who is hoping to have children. I also love the name Amina because it reminds me of prayer, as we say Amiin after reading Qur’an and making du’aa. The meaning (safe and secure) also pleases me as I have been lonely for a long part of my life and felt unsafe before entering islam. …SubhanAllah 🙂

In response to “Anonymous on Thursday 10th of March 2016 11:02:49 AM” from a Turkish person: Turkish people DON’T have an awfully offensive meaning for the name. We use this name too. However, as it is spelled here (Amina) it’s spelled the same way a bad phrase is in our language. This bad phrase is also pronounced differently than the name in question. Further, we spell the name as Emine and see it as a beautiful and pious name just like everyone else in the Muslim world. Not every English spelling of every name translates well to every language, let’s please keep that in mind 🙂

I just posted a comment in response to comment 4 here but it’s not showing up anymore (not sure if it got deleted) but I’m just gonna post it again because comment 4 is kinda misleading. This name in Turkish doesn’t have an awfully offensive meaning, however the spelling “Amina” and the way it’s pronounced in Turkish does. In Turkish the name is spelled “Emine” and is regarded as a beautiful and pious name, just like it is for the rest of the Muslim world. However, if you’re planning on living in Turkey for whatever reason you might want to go with a spelling other than “Amina.” As with every name, the spelling will vary from language to language and occasionally misunderstandings can happen. It’s not the fault of the language/people, just an unfortunate coincidence.
