Assalamu alaikum, Can you please tell me is it acceptable to name a girl with a name which means beautiful (like Zayana)? Or is it considered makrooh? Shukran.
Answer
The meaning of "beautiful" is acceptable for Muslim children. The names of dozens of sahaba (companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions) have such meanings. For example a very common Sahabiyyah name is Jameela, which means "beautiful girl/woman", such as Jameela bint Umar bin al-Khattab, Jameela bint Abdullah bin Hanzala, Jameela bint Saad al-Ansari, Jameela bint Zaid, Jameelah bint Aws, Jameela bint Thabit and Jameela bint Khuzaimah.
When the Prophet disliked the meaning of a name, he would change it. But from the above we see that he didn't do anything about this common Sahabiyyah name, which shows that the meaning of the name is acceptable.
Hasan and Hussein, which are the names of the Prophet's grandsons, also mean "beautiful", "good-looking".
