    Caution: Manāf is a pagan deity making its validity as a Muslim name dubious. It is a zenith of an astronomical body, in between Mashriq and Maghrib. According to tradition Muḥammad’s great-grandfather was named ˁAbd-Manāf, his mother promising him to the god for protection and to satiate any jealousy. The rationale was because he was so radiantly handsome he looked like a full moon in the center of the sky; his surname was al-Qamar for this reason.
