Waqqas is an Arabic name for boys that means “good wrestler”, “brave warrior”. It is derived from the W-Q-SAAD root which means “to break someone’s neck”, thus a literal translation would be “neck-breaker”. Waqqas is an ancient Arabic name and such violent meanings were common at the time, due to the constant warfare that used to happen at the time.
Waqqas is not a Quranic name, but it is the name of a number of companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions, such as Waqqas bin Mujazzir. It is also more commonly known as the name of the father of the famous companion Saad bin Abi Waqqas.
Waqqas is pronounced [(W)ant + r(U)n + Ira(Q)] + [Ira(Q) + m(A)n + (S)weet].
