We named our son ‘Yazdan’ and the websites showed its an arabic name meaning kind, merciful. However, some of the people are of the opinion that it means god. I tried to do some research but couldn’t really find the origin of this name in arabic. My son is 3 years old and I don’t want to change the name but at the same time I am worried that this name may be inappropriate. Please help.

Yazdan (or Yazdaan) meant “God” in Persian language (not in Arabic language). It is not a name of God, it just meant “God”. However, Persian-speaking Muslims usually do not use this word for God, they prefer words Allah (Arabic word meaning God) or Khoda (Persian word meaning Supreme Ruler / God), because they wanted to differentiate themselve from Zoroastrians. So the word Yazdan was an universal word for God in pre-Islamic Persia, but nowadays it used in reference to God mostly by Persian Zoroastrians (for them Ahura Mazda is Yazdan= God). So Yazdan was Persian word for God in ancient times, and it means God in Zoroastrian dialect of Persian language even today.

Yazdan was a name for Ahura Mazda, the god of the fire worshipers.

After my research, I found that a Persian tribe (done sources mention an Egyptian tribe) used to call their God by the name of Yazdan, depicting his kind and merciful nature. Clearly, this is a word of Persian origin. Later on, after the tribe accepted Islam, they continued calling their Allah by this name. Probably that’s why it was included as an Arabic name later on. In fact, this word comes in the 22nd chapter of Al-Quran as well.

To answer the question of the previous commenter. It’s not Arabic or Turkish. It’s a Persian word meaning “God”. Read the previous comments to get the answer to your question. It’s a name for boys in Iran. It’s also used in lots of surnames here (usually with some suffix).

It’s Persian / Iranian and usually very anti-islam/Arabic.

Since Muslims killed almost 5 million Zoroastrians just because of them not accepting Islam when it was forced on the Persians/Iranians.

So Yazdan is a name for what Muslims call fire worshippers. I would say they are enemies.
