Is 'Ayra' an Islamic name? And if so, what does it mean?

Answer

This is an official answer by QuranicNames.com Staff

Ayra (actually `A'irah), which can also be spelled as Ayrah, in Arabic means something without an owner or whose owner is unknown, this is the only Arabic word that sounds like Ayra. According to some Islamic name sites Ayra means respectable, but this seems to be the Sindhi meaning of this name with a Chinese origin, though they put it as the Arabic meaning.

Another meaning of Ayra is "vision-filling", eye-weakening", something of which there is so much that it cannot be summed up by the eyes. Thus in Arabic an ayra amount of wealth means so much wealth that it cannot be quantified.

Ayra is an indirect Quranic word derived from AIN-W-R root, since it doesn't have a bad meaning Muslims can use it as a name.

Ayra is pronounced as (A)rdent +pra(Y) + (RU)n

I’m Thinking of this name for my daughter too. Although extremish name.. Who’s owner is unknown n Vision filling/Eye weakening.. Surely will be commendable if put in the right direction. Master of her own destiny who cannot be owned… Well one’s got to be careful with that kind of power, but it’s respect worthy… And maybe hence the Sindhi meaning. This one’s quite regal in nature. That’s what I think.

My name is Ayra, there is confusion with the “no owner or owner is unknown” part. I think it means that she is free and there is no leash or “owner” to stop to do what she wants. Myself I hate boundaries and being controlled.

A beautiful name that means snow in Welsh❄️

I’m just going to repeat myself with what I said about the name Liam on here.
In Islam we are allowed to use names that have good meanings in our languages as our intention even if it means something negative in Arabic. We (Muslims) are not all Arabs, this is a universal religion. By others’ logic, we can’t use a good meaning Arabic name because it means something bad in another language. You can’t pick and choose the rules.
Adding on to what I was saying about it being fine to use names with good meanings in our language that means something unpleasant in Arabic before anyone tries to be clever, obviously some names are off limits of course like “Shaitan”, “Iblees” etc., I’m talking about suitable names that are pleasant to have in our religion (as Muslims) internationally (since again, most of us are not Arabs).
That’s the fascinating thing about languages. So please be kind and respectful to other cultures.

I have consulted several local imams at different local mosques about this name. The general consensus was “A’ira is an Arabic name whilst Ayra is a non Arabic name, both are permissible to be named.” Do your research before trusting one source of information and speak to your local imam before trusting one website
