Meaning of Aariz
Aariz or Ariz (transliteration ʿĀriḍ) is a direct Quranic name for boys that means “rain-bearing cloud“, “cloud that blocks the horizon“, “downpour“, “torrential rain“. The word Aariz is used twice in the same verse in Quran 46:24.
فَلَمَّا رَأَوْهُ عَارِضًا مُسْتَقْبِلَ أَوْدِيَتِهِمْ قَالُوا هَذَا عَارِضٌ مُمْطِرُنَا بَلْ هُوَ مَا اسْتَعْجَلْتُمْ بِهِ رِيحٌ فِيهَا عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٌ
So when they saw it as a cloud advancing towards their valleys, they said: “This is just a passing cloud that will bring us rain.” “No. It is what you were trying to hasten: The wind which carries the grievous punishment!”
The name Areza is the feminine form of Aariz.
The 11th century scholar al-Jawharī, one of the most important authorities on the Arabic language, says:
العارض: السحابُ يَعْتَرِضُ في الأفق.
ʿĀriḍ (= Aariz): The cloud that blocks in the horizon [i.e. due to its vastness].1
Reinhart Dozy, the great 19th century philologist, mentions:
عارض: السحاب المعترض في الأفق. ويقال الــعارض جائز، أي يهطل المطر مدراراً […] عارض: شؤبوب، وابل مدرار، زخة مطر. وهمرة، مزنة.
ʿĀriḍ (= Aariz): The cloud that intercepts/blocks in the horizon. And it is said “al-ʿāriḍ jā’iz,” meaning the rain pours down torrentially. [… and also:] ʿāriḍ: downpour, torrential rain, shower of rain, and heavy rain, rain cloud.2
The 12th century scholar Al-Rāghib al-Isfahānī, one of the greatest authorities on the meaning of Quranic words, mentions this additional meaning:
وقيل: فلانٌ شديدُ العارضة كناية عن جودة البيان
And it is said: “So-and-so has a strong ʿāriḍah“[the feminine form of the word] as a metaphor for excellence in eloquent speech.3
Another meaning for Aariz is “early in the morning“, “at an early hour“, as mentioned by the Andalusian scholar Ibn Sīda (d. 1066 CE):
ولقيه عارضا: أَي باكرا.
And “he met him ʿāriḍ-an” : meaning early in the morning. 4

I had the same problem 1 1/2 years ago when my son Aariz was Born. Trusting all those websites I thought the meaning is “respectable man” or “leader”. But that is not correct. The correct meaning is given on this page above our comments: rain-bearing cloud (from the Holy Quran) or also “gift”.
