Meaning of Areza
Areza or Ariza (transliteration:ʿāriḍah, starting with a long “aa”) is an indirect Quranic name for girls from that means eloquence in speech, and strength and determination, literally “grit“, “pluck” and “mettle“, i.e. fortitude and resolve. It may also be seen spelled as Arizah or Aariza. It is derived from the -r-ḍ root (ع ر ض, with various derived meanings of of display, breadth, dimension, and turning away), which is used over 70 times in the Quran, as in:
سَابِقُوا إِلَى مَغْفِرَةٍ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَجَنَّةٍ عَرْضُهَا كَعَرْضِ السَّمَاءِ وَالْأَرْضِ أُعِدَّتْ لِلَّذِينَ آَمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ ذَلِكَ فَضْلُ اللَّهِ يُؤْتِيهِ مَنْ يَشَاءُ وَاللَّهُ ذُو الْفَضْلِ الْعَظِيمِ
Race ahead toward forgiveness from your Lord and a Garden whose breadth is like the breadth of the heaven and the earth, prepared for those who have believed in Allah and His messengers. That is the bounty of Allah; He grants it to whom He wills, and Allah possesses immense bounty. (Quran 57:21)
وَعَلَّمَ آَدَمَ الْأَسْمَاءَ كُلَّهَا ثُمَّ عَرَضَهُمْ عَلَى الْمَلَائِكَةِ فَقَالَ أَنْبِئُونِي بِأَسْمَاءِ هَؤُلَاءِ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ صَادِقِينَ (31) قَالُوا سُبْحَانَكَ لَا عِلْمَ لَنَا إِلَّا مَا عَلَّمْتَنَا إِنَّكَ أَنْتَ الْعَلِيمُ الْحَكِيمُ (32)
And He [Allah ﷻ] taught Adam all the names, then He displayed them to the angels and said, “Inform Me of the names of these if you are truthful.” They said, “Glory be to You, we have no knowledge except what You have taught us. Indeed, You are the All-Knowing, the All-Wise.” (Quran 2:31-32)

The name Aariz is the masculine form of Areza.
The 12th century scholar Al-Rāghib al-Isfahānī, one of the most important scholars of the Quran, mentions this meaning:
وقيل: فلانٌ شديدُ العارضة كناية عن جودة البيان
And it is said: “So-and-so has a strong ʿāriḍah (= Areza) as a metaphor for excellence in eloquent speech.1
The 12th century scholar Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī mentions the other meanings for Areza:
في الحديث: قال عَمْرو بن الأَهْتَم للزِّبْرِقَان: “إنه شَدِيدُ العارضة” قال الخليل: أي ذُو جَلَدٍ وصَرَامَة.وقال الأصمعى: أي شَدِيدُ النَّاحِيَة.
ِAnd in hadith: ʿAmr ibn al-Ahtam said to al-Zibriqān: “Indeed he is shadīd al-ʿāriḍah” (strong of ʿāriḍah). Al-Khalīl2 said: meaning one who possesses endurance and determination. And al-Aṣmaʿī said: meaning strong of side/flank.3
The wazir and scholar Al-Ṣāḥib bin ʿAbbād (lived in the 900’s) also mentions this meaning:
وفُلان شَديدُ العارضة: أي ذو جَلِدِ وصَرَامَة.
And so-and-so is shadīd al-ʿāriḍah ( = Areza): meaning one who possesses endurance and determination.4
