Meaning of Layan
Layan is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means softness, gentleness, tenderness, the opposite of roughness. It is derived from the L-Y-N root which is used in a number of places in the Quran.

Acc. to the verse in Surah Taha, it’s used as ‘Qaulan Layyinan’ which means gentle speech.
So if Layan is gentleness, why can’t it be a boy’s name as well. Boys can be gentle too. Right? Layan sounds more of a unisex name to me. Like ‘Amal’ which means ‘hope’ and used for both boys and girls.
