Meaning of Hussein
Hussein (also spelled Husain, Hoseyn, among many other spellings) is an indirect Quranic name for boys whose primary meaning is “tall mountain“, “high mountain“, as is mentioned by the 14th century scholar Ibn Manẓūr in his famous book Lisān al-ʿArab 1, and by other scholars as well2 As it is derived from the Ḥ-S-N root (beauty and goodness), it has connotations of “beautiful”, “handsome”, “goodly”, “gentle”, “well-mannered”, “virtuous.”
Hussein is a common Muslim since it was the name of the grandson of Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his family and companions. It is mentioned by the scholar Murtaḍa al-Zabīdī that Hasan and Hussein were never used as names by Arabs until these names were given to the Prophet’s grandsons, although this is debated by other scholars.3
And be constant in praying at the beginning and the end of the day, as well as during the early watches of the night: for, verily, good deeds drive away evil deeds: this is a reminder to all who bear [God] in mind. (Quran 11:114)
Thereupon Moses returned to his people full of wrath and sorrow, [and] exclaimed: “O my people! Did not your Sustainer hold out [many] a goodly promise to you? bid, then, [the fulfilment of] this promise seem to you too long in coming? Or are you, perchance, determined to see your Sustainer’s condemnation fall upon you, and so you broke your promise to me?” (Quran 20:86)
