Meaning of Hashim
Hashim is an indirect Quranic name for boys that means “breaker”, “brave destroyer of evil”. It is the name of the great ancestor Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings upon him, and Prophet Muhammad’s clan (Banu Hashim) comes from him. He is Hashim bin Abd Manaf, father of Abdul Mutallib. Abdul Mutallib was grandfather of the Prophet.
Hashim is derived from the H26-SH-M root which is used in Surat al-Kahf in the Quran:
And set forth to them parable of the life of this world: like water which We send down from the cloud so the herbage of the earth becomes tangled on account of it, then it becomes dry, broken into pieces which the winds scatter; and Allah is the holder of power over all things. (Quran 18:45)

Hashim was the name of my chief of surgery who with his wife and two children fled the Russian invasion of his country Afghanistan in 1986. They walked for 6 days only at night to reach the Pakistan city of Peshawar. He came to my office, announced himself and became Chief of Surgery for my hospital, his wife Margalota also was hired to assist the women who came as “M” as we called her was also a doctor. I was able to get them out of the country where they settled in the US, became good Americans. The two children graduated from medical school and are now practicing physicians.
