Meaning of Abdul Malik
Abdul Malik (عبد الملك also spelled Abd al-Malik and Abdul Malek) is a Quranic name for boys that means “servant of the King”, meaning “servant of Allah”, being a phrase made up of the Quranic word “Abd” (slave/servant) and the Quranic name of Allah “Malik”. Abdul Malik is one of three similar names all of which mean “servant of the King”, all of them using a Quranic name of Allah, the other two being Abdul Maalik (عبد المالك) and Abdul Maleek. (عبد المليك).
Abdul Malik (the present name) is the name of the the important Umayyad caliph Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan. He is a highly respected and admired leader who saved the caliphate from collapse during a period of intense civil war and then implemented reforms that fundamentally transformed the state, centralizing power and giving the empire a distinctly Islamic identity. He commissioned the construction of the Dome of the Rock in Jerusalem, one of the earliest and most recognizable examples of Islamic architecture. The building’s magnificent design and Qur’anic inscriptions were a powerful statement of Islam’s triumph and permanence in a city holy to both Christians and Jews.
Allah’s name Malik is used in the Quran once in the famous Surat al-Nas:
قُلْ أَعُوذُ بِرَبِّ النَّاسِ (1) مَلِكِ النَّاسِ (2) إِلَهِ النَّاسِ (3) مِنْ شَرِّ الْوَسْوَاسِ الْخَنَّاسِ (4) الَّذِي يُوَسْوِسُ فِي صُدُورِ النَّاسِ (5) مِنَ الْجِنَّةِ وَالنَّاسِ (6)
Say: “I seek refuge in the Lord of mankind, the King of mankind, the God of mankind, from the evil of the whisperer who withdraws, who whispers in the chests of mankind, from among the jinn and mankind.” (Quran 114:1-6)
