Meaning of Rayyan

Rayyan is an indirect Quranic name for both boys and girls. According to hadith (a saying of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him) it is the gate of Paradise dedicated to those who fasted often in their lives. Rayyan is derived from the R-W-Y root, which means one who is satiated of water, who isn’t thirsty, and is used once in the Quran according to certain qira’aat (readings of the Quran) to mean splendor:

We have destroyed so many generations before them, who surpassed them in material power and splendor. (19:74)

    As a Christian born and raised in the US with no Middle Eastern blood, I’d advise parents here to spell the name either Rayan or Rayyan. Most Americans are going to mispronounced the name until you tell them how to pronounce it, and the y vs yy won’t make a difference in pronunciation to native English-speakers (yy might be more confusing because of that, actually — many people would wonder why there are two y’s when one would sound the same).
