Meaning of Shayera

Shayera (also spelled Shayirah, transliteration: shayyirah) is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means “beautiful and elegant in appearance and demeanor.”

According to the 11th century scholar Ibn Manẓūr’s  Lisān al-ʿArab (one of the most respected dictionaries of the Arabic language):

وإِنه لَصَيِّر شَيِّر أَي حسن الصورة والشَّارة، وهي الهيئة؛ عن الفراء. وفي الحديث: أَنه رأَى امرأَة شَيِّرَة وعليها مَناجِد؛ أَي حسنة الشَّارة، وقيل: جميلة.

[when it is said] he is ṣayyir shayyir [other words related to Shayera], meaning: good in appearance and demeanor (or elegance).

Al-Farrā’ said: “al-shārah means one’s overall look or demeanor.”

And in the Hadith: he saw a woman described as shayyirah (= Shayera), wearing richly adorned clothes, meaning she had a fine appearance or was beautiful.1

according to the 16th century scholar Muḥammad al-Fattinī means:

امرأة “شيرة” أى حسنة الشارة والهيئة

A woman who is shayyirah (= Shayera) is beautiful in appearance and form.2

Shayera is a word that is used to describe poetry as being beautiful.34

The SH-W-R root from which Shayera is derived is used once in the Quran in Sūrat al-Shūrā (chapter 42 of the Quran), in the word shūrā, which is also the title of the chapter and means “consultation” (Arabic roots often have various words derived from them that appear to be unrelated, but scholars usually find original links between them.).

وَالَّذِينَ اسْتَجَابُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَأَقَامُوا الصَّلَاةَ وَأَمْرُهُمْ شُورَى بَيْنَهُمْ وَمِمَّا رَزَقْنَاهُمْ يُنْفِقُونَ (38) وَالَّذِينَ إِذَا أَصَابَهُمُ الْبَغْيُ هُمْ يَنْتَصِرُونَ (39)

And those who have responded to their Lord and established the prayer, and their affairs are conducted by consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them they spend. And those who, when transgression befalls them, they defend themselves. (Quran 42:38-39)
