Meaning of Ibrahim

Ibrahim is the name of one of the most important prophets in the Quran. Among his descendants are Prophet Ismaeel, Ishaaq, Yaqoob, Yusuf, Musa, Haroon, Zakaria, Yahya, Isa, and our prophet Muhammad, may the peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and all the prophets and messengers.

Prophet Ibrahim‘s name is mentioned at least 70 times in the Quran, signifying his great importance. He is the only human being who is an “intimate friend” of God, as the Quran testifies in Surat an-Nisaa 4:125:

And who is better in religion than one who submits himself to Allah while being a doer of good and follows the religion of Ibrahim, inclining toward truth? And Allah took Abraham as an intimate friend.

The Quran praises the qualities of prophet Ibrahim in many places, such as:

Indeed Ibrahim is most forbearing and tenderhearted, always intent on returning (to Allah). {Surat Hud 11:75}

The meaning of Ibrahim is not clear as it is an ancient name from non-Arabic origins.

    The famous companion of the Prophet (peace by upon him), Hazrat Ka’ab bin Ujrah (may God be pleased with him), narrates that once it was enquired from Sayyiduna Rasoolullah (peace by upon him) as to how blessings should be sent to him. The Prophet (peace by upon him) replied that the blessings be said in the manner
    (
    O Allah, let Your Peace come upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,
    as you have brought peace to Ibrahim and his family.
    Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
    Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad,
    as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family.
    Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
    )

    [Daroor Ibrahimi]

    To anonymous 1: no it isn’t.

    To anonymous 2: when you mention the Prophet (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم) you either say “صلّى الله عليه و سلّم ” in Arabic, or its english translation “Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him” instead of just “peace be upon him” (not “by upon him”) (because “peace be upon him” is عليه السلام). Also say “صلّى الله عليه و سلّم” when you mention the Prophet Ibrahim (in the phrase Durood Ibrahim).

    For Tashahhud:
    O Allah, bestow Your Peace upon Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as You have bestowed peace to Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.
    Allah, bless Muhammad and the family of Muhammad, as you have blessed Ibrahim and his family. Truly, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.

    The Family of Muhammad صلّى الله عليه و سلّم means Bani Hashim, Bani Mutalib and his wives.

    The family of Ibrahim صلّى الله عليه و سلّم means the believers from his offspring and the Prophets (عليهم الصلاة و السلام) among whom is Muhammad (صلّى الله عليه و سلّم.

    And Allah knows best.

    Anonymous 6: They said the name Ibrahim is not of Arabic origin, so the eaning if not clear.

    The meaning of the name Ibrahim/Abraham is unclear, because it is an ancient name, and it’s also have an unknown meaning in hebrew because Prophet Abraham didn’t speak in hebrew. Some may say that the meaning of Avraham in hebrew “Father is Exalted” but that’s actually not true, because the name that have that meaning is Avram/Abram which contains two hebrew words, Av means Father and Ram means Exalted, while Abraham have an “ha” between the Av and the am.
