Faatin

A Non-Quranic Name for Boys and Girls

Faatin is variant of Fatin and has the exact same meaning and pronunciation (see below for full meaning). You can use either Faatin or Fatin, both are correct and acceptable. If you like this variant more and you'd like to pronounce it the way it is spelled (different than the original name), this is perfectly acceptable. For more details please see the main entry at: Fatin.

Full Meaning of Faatin

Faatin, pronounced as (FA)r + (TIN), could be two different names:

1. Faatin (seductive/bewitching)

The first form of Faatin, which is more common, is written as فاتن / fātin in Arabic, from the ف ت ن (f-t-n) root, the root for the well-known word fitnah (moral difficulties and trials). This Faatin means seductive and bewitching, a woman whose beauty and manners are a cause of temptation and moral difficulties for men. This name, even though it comes from a Quranic root, is not recommended by some scholars, who consider it to have an un-Islamic meaning, since it may imply that the parents hope their daughter will grow up to be a woman with flirtatious manners, although it is more likely than not that in general Faatin merely means “gorgeous” to Arabic-speaking parents who choose this name.. This name has a grammatically feminine variant with the same meaning; Faatinah, pronounced as (FA)r + (TI)n + (NU)mber.

2. Faatin (intelligent/wise)

This name comes from a completely different and unrelated root than the one above, the ف ط ن (f-ṭ-n) root, although in English it would be pronounced exactly the same way (except by Arabic speakers who know to pronounce ṭ). This Faatin means “intelligent”, “clever”, “perceptive”, “wise”. This name can be used for both boys and girls (unlike the earlier Faatin which can only be used for girls). There is a specifically female version of this name, Faatinah, pronounced the same as the one mentioned above. This version of Faatin/Faatinah is not from the Quran, but it is an acceptable name for Muslims since the meaning is good.
