Meaning of Atheer
Atheer is a Quranic boy name that means “light reflected from a sword”. It is not directly mentioned in the Quran, but it is derived from the A-TH-R root which is used in a number of places in the Quran, such as 94:10:
They blaze a trail of dust.
The name is popular due to Ibn al-Atheer, one of the greatest Muslim historians.

The meaning of Atheer أثير has nothing to do with “light reflected from a sword” but rather means “honorable, distinguished, special, preferred”.
From Lisan Al-Arab:
ورجل أَثِير: مكين مُكْرَم، والجمع أُثَرَاءُ والأُنثى أَثِيرَة.
وآثَرَه عليه: فضله.
وفي التنزيل: لقد آثرك الله علينا.
وأَثِرَ أَن يفعل كذا أَثَراً وأَثَر وآثَرَ، كله: فَضّل وقَدّم.
وآثَرْتُ فلاناً على نفسي: من الإِيثار. الأَصمعي: آثَرْتُك إِيثاراً أَي فَضَّلْتُك.
