Full Meaning of Uwais
Uwais is an ancient Arabic name that means “little wolf”, it comes from Aws, which means “wolf”. Aws was the name of one of the main Arab tribes of the city of Madinah, the other being Khazraj.
Uwais is not a Quranic name, but since it doesn’t have a bad meaning, and since three of the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him, had this name, it is an acceptable name for a Muslim baby. The full names of the three companions are: Uwais al-Qarni, Uwais bin as-Samit and Uwais bin Aamir.
Uwais is pronounced [(OO)ps or (U)zbekistan] + [(WAY) + (S)weet], with emphasis on the second syllable. It is written as أُوَيْس in Arabic and can also be written as Uwais, Ouways, Ouwais, Oweis, Uweiss, Uweyss, Uwess in English.
