Tarik

A Quranic Name for Boys

Meaning: Star

Tarik is variant of Taariq (Tariq/Tareq) and has the exact same meaning and pronunciation (see below for full meaning). You can use either Tarik or Taariq (Tariq/Tareq), both are correct and acceptable. If you like this variant more and you'd like to pronounce it the way it is spelled (different than the original name), this is perfectly acceptable. For more details please see the main entry at: Taariq (Tariq/Tareq).

Full Meaning of Tarik

Tariq means “night visitor” or “star”, since stars appear at night. After the discovery of pulsars, which are highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars that emit powerful beams of electromagnetic radiation, some modern Muslim scholars say that tariq refers to these stars, and this interpretation fits the Quranic verse perfectly, because in Arabic tariq means ‘thing that knocks’, and pulsars were initially called ‘knocking stars’, stars that make a constant knocking sound when listened to on a radio receiver.

By the sky and the night comer (or pulsar). And what do you know of the night comer? It is a piercing star. {86:1-3}

Taariq should not be confused with tureeq [T + hUmble + REEd + iraQ], which means path or road.
