Full Meaning of Sohail

Sohail is an Arabic name for boys that means “lenient”, “without trouble”, “easy to interact with”. It is also the name of a star known as Canopus in English, which is the second brightest star in the night-time sky, after Sirius. Sohail can also means “little plain”, a small area of flat land that doesn’t have many trees. Sohail is the diminutive form of Sahl.

Sohail is the name of many Sahaba (companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions), the best known of which is Sohail bin Amr bin Abd Shams al-Qarashi al-Amiri, the spokesman of Quraish. He was one of the top noblemen of the Quraish tribe and was opposed to Islam for many years, until converted and took part in many battles. He is the father of two other companions, Abdullah bin Sohail (a martyr who died in  the Battle of Yamamah during the rule of Abu Bakr) and Abu Jandal bin Sohail.

Other Sahaba with this name are Sohail bin Qais, Sohail bin Aamir and Sohail bin Udayy.
