    Meaning of Raem

Raem is an Arabic word that means “affectionate [mother]“, “loving [mother]”, “motherly”, a mother who has strong affection for her child. As far as I know this word is not used today by Arabs as a name and it is mentioned mainly in the classical sources. But since it has a good meaning, there is no issue with people using it as a name.

The 12th century scholar Abū Mūsā al-Madīnī says:

From a hadith of Aisha, may God be pleased with her, “She shows maternal affection toward him while he rejects her”: meaning she shows compassion toward him as a mother shows maternal affection to her child, and as a she-camel to her calf. A she-camel is described as raʾūm (compassionate) and rāʾimah (the grammatically feminine form of Raem, meaning maternally affectionate), and everyone who loves something and becomes familiar with it has shown raʾm (maternal affection) toward it.1

The 18th century scholar Murtaḍa al-Zabīdī mentions in his encyclopedic Tāj al-ʿArūs, directly mentioning the word Raem:

“She is raʾūm and rāʾimah and rāʾim [Raem]”: she shows affection towards her child. 2
