Nuwayrah
A Quranic Name for Girls
Nuwayrah is variant of Nuwairah and has the exact same meaning and pronunciation (see below for full meaning). You can use either Nuwayrah or Nuwairah, both are correct and acceptable. If you like this variant more and you'd like to pronounce it the way it is spelled (different than the original name), this is perfectly acceptable. For more details please see the main entry at: Nuwairah.
Full Meaning of Nuwayrah
Nuwayrah is an Arabic name for girls that means “little flower” “little fire”, “light”, “radiance”. It is the feminine form of Nuwair.
Mukhtar al-Sihaah of Imam Abu Bakr al-Razi mentions Nuwayrah as the diminutive form of Naar (“fire”), thus meaning ‘little fire”. Other resources, such as the Sultan Qaboos Encyclopedia of Arab Names, also mention that Nuwayrah can be the diminutive form of Nawrah, which means “flower”, “white flower”, thus meaning “little flower”, “little white flower”. Thirdly, the Sultan Qaboos Encyclopedia also mentions the name Nuwair, saying it is a diminutive form of Noor (“light”, “radiance”), and Nuwayrah can be considered a feminine form of Nuwair, thus also having the meaning of “light”, “radiance”.
Thus all three meanings are supported by reliable sources, though originally the name most likely meant “little fire”. It was used for boys during the pre-Islamic age and the early age of Islam, but it is now used for girls. I have updated our article to mention all three meanings.
