Arafat is the name of a mountain near the city of Mecca that pilgrims visit, and it means “place of introduction/knowledge”, meaning that it is a place where people gather and come to know each other. Arafat can be used as a name, it is a direct Quranic name (mentioned in 2:198 in a verse about pilgrimage). It is pronounced [(U)p] + [(RU)n] + [(FAT)] with emphasis on the last syllable.
