I have a friend who wants to revert to Islam, and he wants to know if he can keep his current name. His name is “Varun” which means “water” or something similar to that. I want to know if it is possible for him to keep his name so he won’t have to go through the hassles of changing it everywhere in his documentations.
Your help is highly appreciated.
Thank you

Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuhu! First and foremost, it is great news that your friend learned about Islam and reverted. Mashallah!

Since Varun means “the god of water,” it would not be an acceptable name due to shirk. I believe a name like Harun (name of Prophet Harun (AS), the brother of Prophet Musa (AS)) could be a good idea.
