Clarification on Nickname

Assalamu Alaikum,
My sister gave birth to a baby boy 17 days ago and he is named after our deceased father Ahmad and shes searching for a name to call him as she didn’t want to call him Ahmad because of her personal reasons, she wants a name that is common, good for the child and easy to pronounce by all, So I suggested Aammar as it is a good name, easy to pronounce, unique and common in our area.
Later two of our auts says that the name is an independent name and the boy shouldn’t be given two independent names. So, now she’s calling him Aamir. I want a clarification on this issue, because all the Aammar that I know in our locality have another independent name.
