Meaning of Eleanor
Eleanor is an indirect Quranic name for girls. It means light, radiance, it is a variant of El-Nour, which is a common pronunciation of Al-Nour (light). It may also derive from Turkish Ela (tan, light brown) and Arabic Nour (light). The historical origins of this name in the Western world are not clear, but it is possible that it entered in the West’s vocabulary through the Islamic civilization in Spain.
Nour is derived from the N-W-R root which is used in many places of the Quran and is used in one of the 99 Names of Allah (Al-Nour – Light).
Say, ‘Who is Lord of the heavens and the earth?’ Say, ‘God.’ Say, ‘Why do you take protectors other than Him, who can neither benefit nor harm even themselves?’ Say, ‘Are the blind and the seeing equal? Is darkness equal to light? Or have they assigned partners to God who create as He creates, so that both creations appear to them alike?’ Say, ‘God is the Creator of all things. He is the One, the Almighty.’ (Quran 13:16)
