Baqir is an Arabic name for boys that means “one who has great knowledge”, “one who has knowledge about many things”, “polymath”, “discoverer”. It is also a word for “lion” in Arabic.
Baqir is the nickname of Muhammad al-Baqir, whose full name is Abu Jafar Muhammad bin Ali bin Zain al-Abidin bin al-Husain, a great-grandson of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions and family. Muhammad al-Baqir is a greatly respected scholar and narrator of hadith whose narrations are in the books of Sahih al-Bukhari and Muslim. He was a teacher of Abu Hanifah and he is respected by both Sunni and Shiite Muslims. He is also the 5th Imam of the Twelver Shiite sect.
