Meaning of Asma
Asma is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means exalted, high, great. It is the name of the daughter of Abu Bakr as-Siddiq, the closest companion of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions. It is derived from the S-M-A root (it became exalted, it became high, he/she named something) which is used in the Quran in a lot of places and the root for words like Samaa’ (sky) and Ism (name).
‘Zakariyya, We bring you good news of a son whose name shall be Yahya. We have not given such a name to anyone before.’ (Quran 19:7)
Allah – there is no deity except Him. To Him belong the best names. (Quran 20:8)
The Prophet said, “My Lord knows whatever is said throughout the heaven and earth, and He is the Hearing, the Knowing.” (Quran 21:4)
There are two versions of Asma, both of which have the same meaning. One of them has a pause at the end: Asmaa’, the other is free at the end without a pause: Asmaa. It is up to you whichever pronunciation you choose. Since most people don’t know how to pronounce Arabic pauses (known as hamzah), it might be best to choose the simpler name of Asma over Asmaa’.

I got bullied in my school before because they say my name was disease, and they pronounce it as “Asthma”, then back then I’ve wished, my name was not Asma. But as I grow up and learnt the exact meaning of my name, my lips keeps smiling haha. Even up until now, I can’t still move on. And Alhamdulillah for Allah gives me this name, a beautiful name. And I’ve realized that I typed so much and it’s look like, I am an answering a beauty pageant question. kbye. May Allah gives us tawfik Ameen.

Why dont we write it “Ussmaa” in English!!?!!?!!!?!?!?!?!?!? because otherwise the bullies and bad people intentionally pronounce it ‘asthma’ and some people do so by accident. With ‘Ussma’ in English or “Ussmaa” there is zero confusion?!?! If you have a daughter and you’re planning to name her this, but live in the West, dont do it because she will be bullied like crazy and treated horribly like I was. Or change the way you write it in English, it makes more sense to write it as ‘Ussma” in English for the correct pronunciation
