Meaning of Abd
Abd (ʿabd) is an ancient Arabic name for boys, directly used in the Quran, that means “slave”, “bondsman”, “servant”. It can denote various forms of servitude, devotion, and submission, not exclusively chattel slavery.
In Islamic literature ʿabd is used to refer to humanity in general, considering all of us servants and worshipers of God. While this word is rarely used as a name today (as far as I know, due to its unflattering meaning), it appears to have been common at least in the late pre-Islamic era. Note that ʿabd was traditionally used exclusively for male black slaves, while white slaves were called mamlūk.
It was common in the pre-Islamic era to give boys names with unflattering and negative meanings to protect them from the evil eye, and it is possible this is the reason the word Abd was given as a name to boys (who were neither black nor slaves).
