Meaning of Ezyan

Ezyan or Izyan (transliteration: Ezyān ازيان) is a name for boys and girls that means “to adorn oneself“, “to beautify oneself“, from the Quranic Z-Y-N. This is a rare word only found in the most comprehensive dictionaries. The great 19th century Lane’s Lexicon tells us, in its typically difficult to to read format:

[describing izayyana, the verb form of Ezyan): He, or it, was, or became, adorned, ornamented, decorated, decked, bedecked, … beautified, or graced;] as also اِزَّيَّنَ, [here he cites The Ṣiḥāḥ (of al-Jawharī), , and al-Qāmūs al-Muḥīṭ of Firuzabadi) [a variation of the first, being] originally تَزَيَّنَ, the ت being made quiescent, and incorporated into the ز, and the ا being prefixed in order that the inception may be perfect; (S, TA;) and ↓ ازيانّ.1

He mentions Ezyan at the end as belonging to the same series of words formulated from the Z-Y-N root.

Another source for the name Ezyan is the Dehkhoda Dictionary, the greatest dictionary of the Persian language, with includes tens of thousands of Arabic words that are used in Persian. Dekhoda has only a short entry on this name. He says:

ازیان . [ اِزْ زیا ] (ع مص ) آراسته شدن . (منتهی الارب ).
Ezyan: … (Arabic, masdar): To be beautified. (source: Muntaha al-Arab)2

Above he refers to Muntahā al-Arab fī Lughat al-ʿArab (منتهی الارب فی لغة العرب ), which is a highly respected and authentic Arabic-Persian dictionary.

The 15th century scholar Firuzabadi lists a great number of variations with similar meanings from the Z-Y-N root:

وزَانَه وأزَانَه وزَيَّنَهُ، وأَزْيَنَهُ، فَتَزَيَّنَ هو، وازْدانَ وازَّيَّنَ وازْيانَّ وازْيَنَّ.

Zānahu, Azānahu, Zayyanahu, Azyanhu, Tazayyana [huwa], Izdāna, izzayana, izyānna, izyanna.3

The bolded verb above (“he beautified himself”) can be considered a verb-based source for this name, similar to Yaḥyā, which means “he lives”.

Ezyan is a very rare Arabic word, but it is clear from its structure, and from the references above, that it is an authentic Arabic word. And since it has a good meaning, it is appropriate for Muslims.
