Meaning of Dinar
Dinar is an Arabic name for boys and girls that means “gold coin”. It is a direct Quranic name mentioned in verse 3:75. Dinar is originally from the Roman word Denarius which means “that which contains ten”, since it was worth ten assarion bronze coins.
Dinar is used as slang for “money” in the Arab world, Denaro is the Italian word for “money”. Dinar is the name of the currency used in Iraq today.
Muslims use this name due to the fact that it was the name of a number of companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions), and because it was the last name of the well known scholar Malik bin Dinar.
Among the people of the Book there are some who, if you entrust them with a heap of gold, will return it to you. But there are others of them who, if you entrust them with a single dinar, will not return it to you, unless you keep demanding it from them. That is because they say, ‘We are under no obligation towards the gentiles.’ They deliberately tell lies about God. (Quran 3:75)
