    Abis is an indirect Quranic name for boys that means “grim-faced”, “fierce-faced”. Abis is the name of a number of companions of the Prophet ﷺ, such as Abis al-Ghaffari and Abis bin Rabeea. It is derived from the AIN-B-S root which is used in many places in the Quran.

    Indeed, We fear from our Lord a Day grim and distressful. (Quran 76:10)
