Meaning of Sama
Sama is an indirect Quranic name for girls that means “her status was raised”, “she became exalted”, “she became honored”. The difference between this name and Samaa (sky) is that Sama has the emphasis on the first syllable (SAma), while Samaa‘s emphasis is on the second syllable (saMAA). Sama is derived from the S-M-A root (“high status”, “sky”, “name”) which is used in many places in the Quran.
Then is He who is a maintainer of every soul, [knowing] what it has earned, [like any other]? But to Allah they have attributed partners. Say, “Name them. Or do you inform Him of that which He knows not upon the earth or of what is apparent of speech?” Rather, their [own] plan has been made attractive to those who disbelieve, and they have been averted from the way. And whomever Allah leaves astray – there will be for him no guide. (Quran 13:33)

Allah swt says in Surah Al Araf verse 40: abwab-us-sama. This means doors of heaven. Is the name Sama not a direct Quranic name?

The word سما does not appear in the Holy Quran even once, therefore it would be misleading to say that this is a ‘Quranic’ name. Moreover, it’s not even a noun in Arabic – it’s a verb in the past tense. Verbs are not kept as names! Nouns can be names – but not all of them. The actual spelling of this word is سماء which means ‘sky’ – which again, although being a noun, is not an Islamic name – let alone being a Quranic name. Even non-Muslims don’t keep this name. Have you ever heard a Christian girl called ‘Sky’?!

Sama and Sana are both used as names even though they are verbs. There is no such thing as a rule that says verbs cannot be used as names.
As the article says, it is “indirectly” mentioned, which means while its root is in the Quran, the word itself is not.
Sama is part of the Sultan Qaboos survey of Arab names, meaning that it is used as a name, even if you personally haven’t heard of it.

Someone here commented that a non Muslim has never been named Sky. Yes, there are the names Sky, Skye and Skai. By the way, Sama can also be spelled like Samah, Summah or Samaa, this name can also mean mountain.
