Mahmood is a direct Quranic name for boys that means “praiseworthy”, “laudable”. Mahmood is a synonym of Muhammad. It is used in the Quran in verse 17:79:

And rise from thy sleep and pray during part of the night [as well], as a free offering from thee, and thy Sustainer may well raise thee to a praiseworthy station [in the life to come]. (Quran 17:79)
