Ummaya and Omaya are different spellings of Umayya, which is a non-Quranic name for boys and girls that means "servant", "slave", as in "servant of God". Umayya was a common name at the advent of Islam and many Sahaba and Sahabiaat (male and female companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah upon him and his companions) had this name. It is pronounced [(OO)ps] + [(MAY)] + [(YU)mmy] and can also be written as Umayyah, Omayyah, Umaia, Umaiah, Umayah in English. It is written as أُمَيَّة in Arabic.

Umayya is a good name for girls.i heard about Rabbah ibn umayya ibn khalf who had a loud voice so he repeated the last sermon (khutba hijatul widah) after Holy prophet Muhammad a name of sahabi.

To parents who may be considering giving this name. I wear it. It is difficult to bear the burden of being born with a name implying servitude, or enslavement. I am faithful to God, but it is not due to my name. I would have preferred to be reminded in my name of a virtue, or a quality. Not a condition of powerlessness. Everything I do for God, it is my will. Not because I am his slave.
